Creamy Turmeric Collagen Chai (High fat, low carb)

Turmeric is a member of the ginger family and its roots have been used for culinary and medicinal purposes for ages. You're probably most familiar with it being the main spice in curry powder! It is a bright orange color and has a warm, earthy taste. Turmeric is also well-researched as being supportive of the liver (hepatoprotective) and helpful at removing potentially damaging oxidative substances from your body (antioxidant).


Why make this drink? When I wake up in the morning, I usually drink black coffee. I love a warm, comforting drink to slowly start my day. When I am eating a high fat, low carb diet I need to find delicious ways to take in adequate amounts of fat and protein throughout the day. I find that including a high fat, moderate protein, low carb drink in the morning really helps me attain my ideal macro balance for the day.

Collagen powder from grass-fed animals is a highly digestible and easily assimilated protein found in the connective tissues of animals. "...collagen peptides have been shown to exhibit important physiological functions with a positive impact on health. Numerous studies have shown an improvement in skin elasticity [6], the recovery of lost cartilage tissue [7], reduced activity-related joint pain [8,9], strengthened tendons and ligaments [10,11,12,13], increased lean body mass in elderly men and premenopausal women [14,15], and increased bone mineral density in postmenopausal women".


Ingredients


  • 1 chai tea bag

  • 3 T heavy cream, grass-fed

  • 1 t turmeric powder

  • 1/2 t vanilla extract

  • 5 drops liquid stevia, vanilla creme flavor

  • 1 scoop collagen peptides

  • Pinch cinnamon


Instructions


  1. Boil water and pour over chai tea bag; cover and let steep while you prepare the cream mixture.

  2. Combine the cream, turmeric, vanilla extract, and liquid stevia. Whisk ingredients together. Either heat on the stove until bubbly or in the microwave for about 30 seconds.

  3. Whisk the collagen into the hot cream mixture.

  4. Remove the tea bag from the cup.

  5. Pour the cream mixture over the chai tea.

  6. Add a pinch of cinnamon on top and enjoy!
